Why test your cholesterol?
Your cholesterol level is a vital part of your overall health.
Cholesterol is required by your body for a number of vital functions including the structure and function of cells.
Traditional cholesterol testing that only gives you your total cholesterol level is not the most useful indicator of whether you are at risk of diseases caused by hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol) such as heart disease and stroke.
This is because your total cholesterol is made up of LDL cholesterol (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein). A high level of LDL cholesterol directly increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and other diseases.
However, a high level of HDL cholesterol is a favourable result as this helps to protect you against heart disease.
This is because HDL appears "scour" the walls of blood vessels, cleaning out cholesterol that might be clogging them.
The third element that you should test for is triglycerides. Triglycerides are the chemical form in which most fats exist in the body. We use this for energy and for other body functions.
However, a high level can contribute to life-threatening diseases like heart disease and stroke.
The Cholesterol tests we offer
The Walk-in Clinic provides a comprehensive cholesterol profile.
This profile is a good indicator of whether your cholesterol levels need adjustment through diet and exercise or require medication.
The cholesterol profile can be conducted on its own or as part of our full blood profile which is a very good overview of your overall health and includes around 40 tests for only £95 including kidney function, liver function, iron levels, full blood count and lipids.
Results are available within 24 hours.
