Screening For Clotting

A clotting screen is a blood test that checks how well your blood clots. It helps identify bleeding disorders, monitor clotting problems, and assess risks before surgery. If you are experiencing unusual bleeding, frequent bruising, or have a family history of clotting issues, a clotting screen is usually recommended.

Reasons For Getting A Clotting Screen

A clotting screen checks how well blood clots and helps detect bleeding or clotting disorders. It is recommended for those with frequent nosebleeds, heavy periods, easy bruising, or a history of blood clots or miscarriages.

The test is also done before surgery to prevent excessive bleeding and is used to monitor blood-thinning medications. Since the liver produces clotting factors, the test can help assess liver health. It also detects autoimmune or genetic conditions like lupus anticoagulant syndrome or Factor V Leiden, which increase clotting risks.

Clotting Disorders And Potential Implications

A clotting screen can help spot conditions that affect how your blood clots, such as haemophilia, Von Willebrand Disease, Factor V Leiden Mutation, and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Haemophilia is a genetic condition that causes excessive bleeding and affects about 1 in 10,000 people worldwide. Von Willebrand Disease is much more common, affecting around 80 million people globally, and happens when the blood lacks a key protein needed for clotting.

Factor V Leiden Mutation makes blood more likely to clot and is found in 3 to 8% of people of European descent, meaning millions worldwide have a higher risk of blood clots. DIC, on the other hand, is a serious condition linked to infections or trauma, where the body forms too many clots and then struggles to stop bleeding when needed. A clotting screen can help detect these issues early, making it easier to manage and treat them before they become serious.

Understanding Your Results

Normal results mean your blood is clotting as it should. Prolonged clotting times may suggest a bleeding disorder, while shortened clotting times could indicate a higher risk of blood clots. Abnormal INR levels may require changes to your anticoagulant medication.

Who Is At Risk For Abnormal Clotting?

Individuals at higher risk for clotting disorders include:

  • Those with a family history of clotting issues
  • People with liver disease or chronic illnesses
  • Individuals on long-term anticoagulants
  • Those with a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or stroke

Can a clotting screen diagnose a blood clot?
A clotting screen itself cannot diagnose an existing blood clot but can help assess your risk or underlying clotting disorders that may predispose you to forming clots.
Can pregnancy affect clotting screen results?
Yes, pregnancy can alter clotting screen results because the body naturally increases clotting factors to prevent excessive bleeding during childbirth. Some women may also be tested for clotting disorders if they have a history of recurrent miscarriages or preeclampsia.
What additional tests might be done if my clotting screen is abnormal?
Depending on your results, additional tests may include a D-dimer blood test, or genetic testing to screen for clotting disorders like Factor V Leiden mutation.
