Sexual Health > Chlamydia And Gonorrhoea
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are two very common sexually transmitted infections that can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics. Early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing potential complications and ensuring your overall sexual health.
By getting tested, you take an important step in maintaining your well-being and preventing the spread of these infections. Our healthcare team is here to provide you with the necessary support and treatment options tailored to your needs.
This test package allows you to get tested for both Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea at a discounted rate. These two sexually transmitted diseases are common bacterial infections acquired through unprotected sexual contact and affect men and women equally.
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are often found as active infections at the same time (co-infection), which is why they are frequently tested for together. They are also easily transmitted, and the age group 16 – 24 is statistically at a higher risk of contracting these infections. If you are within this age group and engaging in unprotected sex, it is recommended that you get tested regularly.
Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It can infect both men and women and is primarily spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Common symptoms in women include abnormal vaginal discharge, a burning sensation during urination, pain during intercourse, and bleeding between periods. In men, symptoms include discharge from the penis, a burning sensation during urination, and pain and swelling in one or both testicles (less common).
Gonorrhoea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It commonly infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in both men and women. It can also infect the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum.
Common symptoms in women include increased vaginal discharge, painful urination, vaginal bleeding between periods, and abdominal or pelvic pain. In men, common symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis, and painful or swollen testicles (less common).
If Chlamydia is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease (which can cause chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility in women), epididymitis (which can lead to infertility in men), and an increased risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV (in both men and women).
If Gonorrhoea is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain in women. In men, it can cause epididymitis, and in both sexes, it can lead to disseminated gonococcal infection (which can cause arthritis, tenosynovitis, and dermatitis).
Chlamydia is diagnosed through laboratory tests, including urine tests or swabs from the affected area. It is easily treatable with antibiotics, usually azithromycin or doxycycline. Both partners should be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection, and sexual activity should be avoided until the treatment course is completed.
Gonorrhea can be diagnosed using a variety of tests, including nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), which are highly sensitive and specific. These tests can be performed on urine samples or swabs from potentially infected sites (cervix, urethra, throat, rectum). It is usually treated with antibiotics. Due to increasing antibiotic resistance, the CDC currently recommends a dual therapy consisting of two antibiotics, namely ceftriaxone and azithromycin.
If you suspect you may have been exposed to Chlamydia or Gonorroea, or are experiencing any symptoms mentioned above, it is important to take action promptly. Early detection is key to effective treatment and preventing potential complications.
