Reasons STDs Screening Are Important

  • Early Detection: Many STDs may not show symptoms initially or have mild symptoms that can be mistaken for other conditions. Screening helps detect infections early, allowing for prompt treatment.
  • Prevention Of Complications: Untreated STDs can lead to serious health complications such as infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pain, and in some cases, even death.
  • Protection Of Sexual Partners: Knowing your STD status allows you to take measures to protect your sexual partners from infection.
  • Peace of Mind: Regular screening provides peace of mind, especially if you are sexually active or have multiple partners.
  • Community Health: By getting tested, you contribute to public health efforts by reducing the overall prevalence of STDs in the community.
  • Accessibility To Treatment And Support: If an STD is detected, early treatment is more effective. Screening connects individuals with appropriate medical care and support services if needed.
  • Reduced Stigma: Normalising STD screening reduces stigma associated with sexually transmitted infections. It encourages open conversations about sexual health and encourages more people to seek testing and treatment.

Who Should Consider Testing?

A full STD screening is recommended for all sexually active individuals. Anyone who is sexually active, regardless of age, should consider regular STD screening. This includes individuals who have multiple partners.

A routine full STD screening for certain STIs, such as HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhoea, is recommended during pregnancy to protect both the parent and the unborn child from potential complications.

If you have been diagnosed with an STI in the past, regular screening can help monitor your health and detect any recurrence or new infections early, especially if you experience symptoms such as unusual genital discharge, sores, pain during urination, or pain during sexual intercourse.

Individuals who inject drugs are at increased risk for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and other STIs through needle sharing or risky sexual behaviours. If your sexual partner has been diagnosed with an STI, it is also important for you to get tested.

Moving Forward After A Positive Test

First and foremost, consult with a healthcare provider. Schedule an appointment with a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment options.

Secondly, it is crucial to inform your recent sexual partners so that they can get tested and, if necessary, receive treatment. Thirdly, depending on the STD, treatment may involve medication (such as antibiotics), lifestyle changes, or both. It is of the utmost importance to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully to ensure effective treatment and recovery.

In some cases, your healthcare provider may recommend re-testing after treatment to ensure that the infection has been cured. After treatment, practise safe sex to prevent re-infection or transmission of other STDs.

The Procedure

preparing for appointment

Pre-Appointment

When preparing for your test, it is recommended to refrain from urinating for at least 2 hours prior to the test, as this can affect the concentration of certain substances in your urine. Additionally, it is important to inform the doctor about any medications or antibiotics you are currently taking. This information is essential as certain medications can interfere with test results or may need to be temporarily discontinued before the test.

Will I have a chance to speak to someone?
You will consult a senior specialist nurse (£85) if you have symptoms before agreeing on the best testing method. This will include a telephone call with your results if you want one and any prescriptions or referrals you may need. Even if you don’t have symptoms, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask any questions you may have.
When and how will I receive my results?
Your blood results will be available in 4 – 6 working hours, and the rest will be available within 2 working days. If you want faster results for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, you can discuss other fast testing options outside of this package with your nurse. Your results will be sent via email, and your nurse will call you if there is anything to discuss. If you would prefer not to receive an email or be called, you can call in for your results.
Is it easy to book?
Absolutely – you can book online right away or give us a call.
