Did you know that one in eight UK adults reports experiencing daily fatigue?
With increasing daily demands, viral diseases affecting energy levels, and the stress of recent years, fatigue has become a growing and debilitating concern, making a fatigue health check all the more important.
It can be challenging to seek help when experiencing tiredness and fatigue. Sometimes, expressing how you feel is difficult, and responses such as “sleep better” or “drink more water” may not be helpful.
While your lifestyle does impact our energy levels, fatigue can be more than just normal tiredness for some individuals. It affects all aspects of life and can feel like a constant weight, holding us back as we try to move forward. One patient described it as “constantly walking in mud,” a sentiment echoed by many others. If you feel like you are walking in mud, reach out so we can help uncover the cause.
If you have experienced a gradual decline in energy and an increased frequency of fatigue, our doctors aim to diagnose fatigue through a comprehensive approach. This includes conducting a detailed medical history and physical examination.
After our initial assessment, we conduct targeted tests based on suspected causes, including blood tests for anaemia, thyroid issues, infections, and inflammation. Identifying the precise cause of fatigue can be complex; however, these diagnostic measures enable doctors to pinpoint potential factors contributing to fatigue and tailor appropriate treatments accordingly.
Fatigue can arise from various common causes, including anaemia and iron deficiency, which affect oxygen transport and energy production. Thyroid dysfunction and low vitamin D levels can also contribute by disrupting metabolism and bone health, respectively. Viral illnesses like Epstein Barr Virus and influenza may lead to prolonged fatigue. Diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, and food intolerances such as lactose and fructose intolerance can impair energy levels and digestive health.
Poor gut health, stress, and burnout are additional factors impacting fatigue, alongside lifestyle choices that affect sleep, diet, and physical activity levels. Hormonal changes, such as those during menopause, can also play a significant role in fatigue experienced by individuals. Identifying these diverse factors is crucial for developing tailored approaches to manage and alleviate fatigue effectively.
During your Fatigue Health Check, an experienced doctor will listen to your concerns and discuss likely causes. They will be interested in understanding when you noticed your symptoms, what might have preceded them, your past medical history, your family history, your stresses and demands and your lifestyle.
They will then conduct tests that include all of the elements of our Platinum Blood Profile, which looks at the most common causes, from anaemia to iron deficiency to thyroid dysfunction and vitamin deficiencies.
Once your results are back (usually within 24 hours), they will call you to discuss them and explore the next steps. If you need treatment, this will be provided, and lifestyle advice will also be given to support your recovery.
