Fatigue Health Check

It can be challenging to seek help when experiencing tiredness and fatigue. Sometimes it’s hard to express how you feel, or you may experience unhelpful responses such as “sleep better” or “drink more water”.

Lifestyle indeed impacts our energy levels, but fatigue is much more than normal tiredness for some of us. It affects all aspects of life and feels like a constant weight, dragging us backwards while we try to move forward. One patient described it as “constantly walking in the mud”, which many agreed with.

So what to do?

If your fatigue is relatively new, you may have an understanding of its trigger – for example, COVID-19 or another viral illness like Epstein Barr Virus. But you may have felt your energy waning over time, fatigue becoming a more frequent occurrence for you. The first step is to understand what might be causing your fatigue.

We may not always be able to find out, as fatigue is a complex medical issue sometimes.

The most common causes

  • Anaemia
  • Iron deficiency
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Low vitamin D
  • Viral illness
  • Diabetes
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Food intolerances (e.g. lactose and fructose)
  • Poor gut health
  • Stress and burnout
  • Lifestyle
  • Hormonal changes such as menopause

What happens during the Fatigue Health Check?

During your Fatigue Health Check, an experienced doctor will listen to your concerns and discuss likely causes. They will be interested in understanding when you noticed your symptoms, what might have preceded them, your past medical history, your family history, your stresses and demands and your lifestyle.

They will then conduct tests that include all of the elements of our Platinum Blood Profile, which looks at the most common causes, from anaemia to iron deficiency to thyroid dysfunction and vitamin deficiencies.

Once your results are back (usually within 24 hours), they will call you to discuss them and explore the next steps. If you need treatment, this will be provided, and lifestyle advice will also be given to support your recovery.

Fatigue Health Check Explained

A comprehensive physical examination is conducted to check for any physical signs that might indicate the cause of fatigue. This can include checking the heart, lungs, abdomen, thyroid, and lymph nodes, as well as assessing overall physical condition.

Blood tests are a key component of the Fatigue Health Check. Common tests include a complete blood count (CBC) to check for anemia, thyroid function tests, blood sugar levels to rule out diabetes, and tests for kidney and liver function. Depending on the patient’s symptoms and medical history, additional tests may be ordered to check for specific conditions like vitamin deficiencies (e.g., Vitamin D, B12), electrolyte imbalances, or markers of inflammation.

What exactly is a Fatigue Health Check, and why is it necessary?
A Fatigue Health Check is a comprehensive medical evaluation aimed at identifying the underlying causes of persistent tiredness or fatigue. It is necessary because fatigue can be a symptom of various health issues, ranging from simple lifestyle factors to more serious medical conditions like anemia, thyroid disorders, or chronic fatigue syndrome. The check typically includes a detailed medical history review, physical examination, laboratory tests, and discussions about lifestyle, diet, and mental health. The goal is to diagnose any underlying issues accurately and develop an effective treatment plan.
To prepare for a Fatigue Health Check, you should: – Keep a diary of your fatigue symptoms, noting patterns and severity. – List all medications and supplements you’re currently taking. – Gather any relevant medical history information, including previous diagnoses and treatments. – Prepare a list of questions or concerns you have about your fatigue. – Be ready to discuss lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep patterns, and stress levels. – Consider any family medical history that might be relevant. – Wear comfortable clothing for the physical examination and possibly fast if blood tests are required. – Ensure you have enough time for the appointment and arrange transportation if needed.
Following a Fatigue Health Check, your doctor will analyze the information gathered to diagnose the possible causes of your fatigue. This may involve identifying specific medical conditions, assessing lifestyle factors, or recognizing mental health issues contributing to your tiredness. Based on the diagnosis, a treatment plan will be developed. This could include medical treatments for identified conditions, recommendations for lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and possibly referrals to specialists. The treatment approach is usually personalized, and ongoing monitoring and adjustments may be necessary to effectively manage and alleviate your fatigue.
