Compare Blood Tests, Packages & Prices
Think back 5 years ago, or before COVID, and there were very few options for good blood test packages in London. Now, it’s difficult to know who to trust or where to look! From home-testing companies all over your algorithm to suppliers who add on GP consultations and phlebotomy fees without notice, it’s important to be vigilant and sure about which blood testing service you use.
And then there are the dozens of different options! From basic blood counts to comprehensive health profiles covering cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid function, vitamins and cardiovascular risk, different packages can tell you very different things about your health.
The key is not necessarily choosing the package with the greatest number of tests. It is choosing a blood test package that matches what you actually want to know.
This guide explains what to look for when comparing private blood test packages in London, which biomarkers may be useful for different health goals, and the blood testing options available at City Walk-In Clinic.
What is a blood test package?
A blood test package combines several laboratory tests into one health profile.
Rather than requesting individual tests separately, a package may investigate several areas of health at once, such as:
- Full blood count
- Liver function
- Kidney function
- Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
- Blood glucose and diabetes markers
- Thyroid function
- Iron levels
- Vitamin B12 and folate
- Vitamin D
- Inflammation
- Hormones
- Advanced cardiovascular or metabolic markers
Packages can therefore be useful for routine health monitoring, investigating symptoms or getting a broader picture of your health.
However, the best blood test package depends on your reason for testing.
How do you choose the best blood test package?
When comparing private blood tests in London, start by asking what question you want the test to answer.
A general health blood test should usually cover the fundamentals. This might include a full blood count alongside markers for liver function, kidney function, blood sugar, and cholesterol.
These tests can provide a useful baseline and may identify results that warrant further investigation.
For tiredness or low energy
Persistent tiredness can have many causes, so a broader profile may be more useful.
Depending on your circumstances, testing may include a full blood count, iron profile, thyroid function, vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D, alongside general liver and kidney markers.
Interpret blood tests alongside your symptoms and medical history, rather than in isolation.
For metabolic health and diabetes risk
If your priority is metabolic health, look carefully at the glucose-related tests included in a package.
Blood glucose provides information about glucose levels at a particular point in time, while HbA1c indicates average blood glucose over the preceding two to three months.
More advanced assessments may also include fasting insulin alongside cholesterol and other cardiovascular markers.
For heart health
A standard cholesterol profile is useful, but cardiovascular risk is broader than a single cholesterol number.
For people particularly interested in future cardiovascular risk, a more advanced blood profile may provide additional information. You should still consider your results alongside factors such as blood pressure, smoking, family history, age, and existing medical conditions.
City Walk-In Clinic blood test packages
City Walk-In Clinic offers four main blood test packages in London, ranging from an entry-level profile to a comprehensive cardiovascular and metabolic assessment. They also offer a range of cheap and easy add-ons to tailor their packages to your interests – for example, a fasting insulin test, hormone test, cortisol and more for just £45 per marker.
Silver Blood Test Package – £59
The Silver Package is the starting point and includes around 40 biomarkers.
It includes a comprehensive full blood count, liver function, kidney function, lipid profile, iron profile and inflammatory markers such as ESR and muscle damage marker creatine kinase, making it suitable for someone looking for an accessible baseline blood assessment rather than an extensive health screen.
A full blood count examines components of the blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, and can provide useful information relating to issues such as anaemia, infection, and general blood health.
The rest of the package is an excellent overview of your body’s main systems. It’s also the most useful profile for ongoing monitoring of the impact of various medicines and treatments.
Gold Blood Test Package – £99
The Gold Package expands the assessment to around 45 biomarkers.
It is designed to provide additional information useful for general health monitoring and monitoring chronic disease status and progression.
For someone who wants everything in the silver, plus a full thyroid check and vitamin D level, a helpful profile for vitality and ongoing monitoring.
Platinum Blood Test Package – £179
For people seeking a more comprehensive blood test in London, the Platinum Package covers around 50 biomarkers. We recommend this as a diagnostic tool as well as for screening.
The profile is designed to investigate many of the common medical causes of symptoms such as tiredness and provides substantially broader testing than the entry-level packages.
Depending on the profile selected, testing across City Walk-In Clinic’s packages can include full blood count, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, glucose, iron, vitamin D, thyroid function, vitamin B12, folate, inflammatory markers and diabetes screening.
This makes a broader package particularly useful for someone who wants an overall health assessment or has symptoms with several possible causes.
Diamond Blood Test Package – £395
The Diamond Package is City Walk-In Clinic’s most extensive standard blood testing package, covering around 59 biomarkers.
It focuses on understanding longer-term cardiovascular and metabolic risk and includes advanced testing beyond a routine health profile.
This can include advanced cardiac markers and fasting insulin in addition to broader routine health testing.
For someone specifically interested in heart health, metabolic health or a detailed preventative health assessment, this is the most comprehensive of the four standard packages.
Blood test package comparison
| Package | Price | Approx. biomarkers | Best suited to |
| Silver | £59 | 40 | Essential health systems and baseline testing |
| Gold | £99 | 45 | Broader routine health monitoring |
| Platinum | £179 | 50 | Comprehensive health assessment and tiredness |
| Diamond | £395 | 59 | Advanced cardiovascular and metabolic assessment |
Blood test package or full health screening?
There is an important difference between having blood tests and having a full medical health screening.
Blood tests provide valuable laboratory information, but they do not replace a clinical assessment.
A comprehensive health screening may combine blood testing with a medical history, lifestyle and family-history assessment, physical examination, blood pressure, body measurements and, depending on the package, an ECG or additional investigations.
City Walk-In Clinic’s broader health screening services include a 90-minute GP consultation and physical examination, resting ECG, multiple blood tests, and more, with packages tailored to individual health needs.
If you have unexplained symptoms or significant health concerns, a doctor-led assessment may therefore be more appropriate than simply selecting the largest blood test package available. Call us to discuss the best options for you or book in for a Wellperson online.
Can you have a private blood test without a GP referral?
For all of our blood profiles, yes, you can. You do not need a GP referral to access our blood testing service.
One advantage of private blood testing is the ability to access routine testing without waiting for an NHS GP referral.
This can be particularly convenient for people who want to monitor an existing marker, arrange a preventative health check or obtain testing around a busy work schedule.
If your symptoms require medical assessment, however, it may be better to see a GP first so that the appropriate tests can be selected. You can see one of our GPs or your own.
Where can I get a blood test in the City of London?
For people working in the Square Mile, convenience can be as important as the test itself.
City Walk-in Clinic is located at 31 Old Broad Street, London EC2N 1HT, making it particularly convenient for people working around Liverpool Street, Bank, Moorgate and the wider City of London. We also have a branch in W1, near Oxford Circus and Bond Street.
The clinic provides private GP services, blood testing, sexual health testing and preventative health screening, allowing patients to access testing and medical follow-up through the same provider.
Which blood test package is best?
There is no single “best” blood test package for everyone.
For straightforward baseline testing, Silver may be sufficient. Gold offers broader monitoring, while Platinum is likely more appropriate when you want a comprehensive general health assessment or are investigating issues such as persistent tiredness, brain fog, lack of energy, and so on.
For people specifically interested in a deeper assessment of cardiovascular and metabolic risk, Diamond offers the most extensive standard profile.
The most useful blood test is ultimately the one that answers the right clinical question. If you are unsure which package to choose, discussing your symptoms, medical history, family history and health goals with one of our GPs can help avoid both unnecessary testing and missing tests that may genuinely be useful.
