Understanding Vaginal Discharge

Woman Has Pain in the Genital Area and Vagina on a White Background

There has been an increased push of vaginal cleansing and douching products and practices. Vaginal discharge is a normal and essential part of a woman’s reproductive system. It helps maintain vaginal health by cleansing the area and providing lubrication. However, it’s important to be aware of what constitutes as healthy vaginal discharge and when it might indicate an underlying issue.

If you are concerned about your vaginal discharge, seeing an experienced GP is the most appropriate next step. Please do not start douching or using products on the area if you are experiencing abnormal discharge.

Healthy Vaginal Discharge

Healthy vaginal discharge is typically clear or milky in colour, and its consistency may vary throughout the menstrual cycle. It is usually has a mild scent. This discharge acts as a self-cleaning mechanism, removing dead cells and bacteria from the vagina. Some women may notice an increase in vaginal discharge during ovulation or sexual arousal, which is normal.

Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

While some changes in vaginal discharge are normal, certain symptoms may indicate an underlying issue. Here are some abnormal characteristics to watch out for:

1. Changes in colour: If your discharge is yellow, green, grey, or has a strong, unpleasant odour, it may indicate an infection or an imbalance in vaginal bacteria.

2. Texture & consistency: Discharge that is clumpy, cottage cheese-like, frothy, or accompanied by unusual itching or burning could be a sign of a yeast infection or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like trichomoniasis.

3. Excessive discharge: If you notice a sudden increase in the amount of discharge, it could be an indication of hormonal changes, an infection, or other underlying health issues.

4. Blood-tinged discharge: Spotting or light bleeding between periods, especially when accompanied by abdominal pain, could be a sign of various gynaecological conditions that require medical attention.

When to Seek Medical Attention

It’s important to consult a healthcare professional if you experience any of the following:

1. Persistent abnormal discharge: If your discharge has a strong foul odour, unusual colour, or is accompanied by itching, burning, or pain, it’s best to seek medical advice.

2. Recurring infections: If you have a history of recurring yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider to identify the underlying cause and prevent further complications.

3. Unprotected sexual encounters: If you have had unprotected sex or suspect you may have been exposed to an STI, it’s crucial to get tested and seek appropriate treatment.

Understanding what constitutes as healthy and abnormal vaginal discharge is an essential aspect of maintaining good reproductive health. While some changes in discharge are normal, significant variations in colour, odour, texture, or accompanying symptoms should not be ignored. By paying attention to your body and seeking medical attention when necessary, you can ensure optimal vaginal health and overall well-being.
