Lipoprotein (A) Testing

A lipoprotein (a) test is a simple blood test.

It measures the level of lipoprotein (a) in your blood to help determine if you are at high risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other blood vessel diseases.

Lipoprotein (A) Explained

Lipoprotein (a) is a genetically inherited lipoprotein (a molecule made of fat and protein that carries cholesterol in the blood). It is similar to LDL (often referred to as “bad cholesterol”). However, Lp (a) has an additional component called apolipoprotein (a), which makes it different from LDL.

This particular lipoprotein has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular complications. This makes getting a lipoprotein (a) blood test all the more important.

Should You Get Tested?

A lipoprotein (a) blood test is recommended for individuals with a family history of heart disease, stroke, or cardiovascular issues.

It is also strongly advised for those with a personal history of early heart disease, unexplained cardiovascular events, high blood pressure, diabetes, or persistently high cholesterol levels despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

A Look At Your Lp (A) Results

Lp (a) test results are measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Low to normal levels are generally below 30 mg/dL (which may indicate a lower risk of cardiovascular disease).

Elevated levels are typically 30 mg/dL or higher, suggesting a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions, particularly when combined with other risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Risk Associated With Elevated Lp (A) Levels

Elevated Lp (a) levels are associated with an increased risk of several cardiovascular conditions, including

  • Stroke
  • Heart Disease
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Blood Clotting
  • Aortic Valve Stenosis
  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

How does a lipoprotein (a) test differ from a standard lipid panel?
A lipoprotein (a) test specifically measures the concentration of lipoprotein (a). Lipoprotein (a) is not routinely assessed in standard cholesterol testing. A standard lipid panel measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.
How often should I get my Lipoprotein (a) levels checked?
Since lipoprotein (a) levels are genetically determined and remain relatively stable over time, the test is usually performed only once. However, your doctor may recommend retesting if there are changes in your health or treatment plan, or as part of ongoing cardiovascular risk assessment.
What should I do if my lipoprotein (a) levels are high?
If you have elevated levels, your doctor may recommend a comprehensive cardiovascular risk management plan. This could include controlling risk factors such as high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and diabetes through medications and lifestyle changes. Regular monitoring, a heart-healthy diet, and tailored treatment strategies can help mitigate the associated risks.
