There are more than 50,000 women and around 350 men diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. It is the second most common cancer in women in the UK. The first and most noticeable symptom of breast cancer is a lump in the breast, or an area where the breast tissue is thickened.
Symptoms that it is especially important to be aware of, and to see a doctor if you notice, include:
The causes of breast cancer are not fully understood. Once the abnormal cancer cells begin to develop, they can multiply rapidly, which is what causes the lump or mass. These cells can metastasize, infecting the lymph nodes or other organs in the body. Risk factors are often at play, but cases of breast cancer cannot always be attributed to the presence of risk factors.
Women are far more likely to get breast cancer than men. 5-10% of breast cancer is linked to genetic gene mutations. Age, family history of breast cancer, exposure to radiation, and early menarche (starting your periods below 12 years of age) are some common risk factors.
Regular breast screening is a vital early detection measure and it should become a regular part of your health routine. If you find a lump in your breast it is necessarily a sign of cancer, but it is vital that you make an appointment to speak to one of our specialists as soon as possible.
It is not always easy to get an NHS GP appointment and this is not always as quick as you would hope. We offer same-day private GP appointments with experienced doctors at our two central London clinics. We offer consultations, examinations and advice on self-examination as well as urgent referrals for ultrasounds and mammograms.
Use our online booking engine or book your test by giving us a call.

You will be seen by one of our friendly doctors or trained clinicians.
Before your appointment for breast cancer screening or consultation, it’s important to be familiar with your breasts’ normal look and feel. This helps in identifying any unusual changes. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, share this information with the doctor during your consultation.
During the appointment, a thorough breast examination will be conducted by one of our specialists. They will check for lumps, thickening, or other changes in the breast tissue. If necessary, they may recommend further diagnostic tests such as mammograms or biopsies to accurately diagnose any abnormalities.
Following the examination and any additional tests, our specialist will discuss the results with you. If any signs of breast cancer are found, they will guide you through the next steps and options for treatment. Our clinic provides support in referrals to oncologists and other specialists for comprehensive care.
