Understanding Asthma Symptoms

The primary symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness (shortness of breath), which tend to worsen in the evening and early morning, especially when the condition is not well controlled with treatment.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and are often manageable with appropriate treatment. However, triggers such as allergens or exercise can exacerbate symptoms. In some cases, asthma can be persistent and more challenging to control.

Individuals with asthma may experience “asthma attacks,” during which their symptoms suddenly or gradually worsen. Severe attacks may require hospital treatment.

Common Asthma Triggers

Common triggers include:

  • Allergens: Pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold.
  • Irritants: Tobacco smoke, strong odors, and air pollution.
  • Respiratory Infections: Colds, flu, and other infections.
  • Weather Changes: Cold air, humidity, and extreme temperatures.

Recognising Asthma Attacks

An asthma attack occurs when symptoms significantly intensify. This worsening can develop gradually over several days or strike suddenly and unexpectedly.

During an attack, your inhaler may not provide the usual relief. If you use a peak flow meter to monitor your condition, a noticeable drop in peak expiratory flow often precedes an attack.

If you suspect an asthma attack is underway, contact a healthcare professional or clinic immediately. In severe cases, you might experience:

  • Elevated or rapid heartbeat.
  • Rapid or increased breathing rate.
  • Drowsiness, exhaustion, or dizziness.
  • Bluish discoloration of the lips or fingers.
  • Intense and persistent wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness.
  • Severe breathlessness that disrupts eating, speaking, or sleeping.

For a severe asthma attack, call 999 immediately for urgent assistance.

Asthma Treatment Essentials

For most people with asthma, the treatments that are currently available are effective and will allow you to keep the condition from restricting your life.

Inhalers

The primary asthma treatment is an inhaler, swiftly delivering medication to your lungs as you breathe. Various types exist, some with pressurised canisters, spraying medicine in vapour form, while others use dry powder capsules. The doctor will train you to use an inhaler.

Spacers

Pressurised canister inhalers are more effective when used with a spacer, a hollow container that helps deliver the medicine. This device allows young children to breathe more easily and ensures the medication is inhaled fully for optimal lung absorption.

Other medications

Other asthma treatments include various kinds of inhalers, oral medicines, surgery, and breathing exercises.

Asthma-Friendly Home Environment

Reducing Allergens:

  • Air Quality: Enhance indoor air quality by using air purifiers to minimise airborne allergens and pollutants.
  • Dust Control: Regularly clean your home and use dust-mite-proof covers on pillows and mattresses to reduce dust exposure.
  • Pet Management: Manage pet dander by grooming pets frequently and keeping sleeping areas pet-free.

Mold And Moisture Control:

  • Humidity Control: Use dehumidifiers and ensure proper ventilation in damp areas, such as bathrooms and kitchens, to maintain optimal humidity levels.
  • Mold Prevention: Address mold issues promptly by cleaning affected areas with appropriate products and fixing leaks to prevent mold growth.

Genetic Predisposition Can Cause Asthma

A genetic predisposition can play a significant role in the likelihood of developing certain health conditions. For example, if asthma or other allergic conditions, such as eczema or hay fever, are prevalent within a family, this hereditary pattern may increase the risk of these conditions manifesting in other family members. This familial tendency can be attributed to shared genetic factors that influence the immune system and allergic responses, making individuals with such a family history more susceptible to these conditions.

Impact Of The Environment On Asthma

  • Respiratory Infections: Especially during early childhood.
  • Weather Conditions: Cold air or sudden changes in weather.
  • Stress And Emotional Factors: High stress and strong emotions.
  • Physical Activity: Exercise-induced asthma triggered by physical exertion.
  • Tobacco Smoke: Both active smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Allergens: Exposure to substances like pollen, mold, pet dander, and dust mites.
  • Occupational Exposures: Exposure to irritants or allergens in the workplace.
  • Chemical Irritants: Exposure to chemicals, such as those in cleaning products.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux irritating the airways.
  • Air Pollution: Exposure to pollutants such as smoke, vehicle emissions, and industrial chemicals.
