Anti-Müllerian Hormone Test

AMH tests are primarily used to assess female reproductive health. They are also combined with other tests to aid in treating female infertility.

The test measures AMH levels in your blood to assess ovarian function and reserve. AMH is a hormone produced by small ovarian follicles, each containing an egg. The AMH level indicates the number of follicles and eggs remaining in your ovaries.

Should You Get An AMH Test?

An AMH test is usually recommended if you are planning to become pregnant or are struggling to conceive or experiencing infertility.

It is also recommended if you have symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation (as these treatments can impact ovarian reserve, and monitoring AMH levels can be crucial).

Anti-Müllerian Results Explained

  • High AMH levels: Often associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or a good ovarian reserve. It may suggest that fertility treatments like IVF could be more successful
  • Normal AMH levels: Indicative of a healthy ovarian reserve, suggesting a reasonable chance of conceiving naturally or through fertility treatments
  • Low AMH levels: May indicate a reduced ovarian reserve, which could mean a lower number of available eggs. This can sometimes be linked to age-related fertility decline or conditions like early menopause
  • Very low AMH levels: Can suggest a very low ovarian reserve or premature ovarian failure, which may require fertility treatments such as egg donation

Normal AMH Levels By Age

In women, AMH levels start rising during adolescence and peak around 25 years old. After that, AMH levels naturally decline. This means it is normal to see a lower ovarian reserve in your 30s, 40s and 50s. AMH levels are measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). These are general ranges you can expect to see according to age:

  • 25 years old: 3.0 ng/mL.
  • 30 years old: 2.5 ng/mL.
  • 35 years old: 1.5 ng/ mL.
  • 40 years old: 1 ng/mL.
  • 45 years old: 0.5 ng/mL.

What An AMH Does Not Measure

While AMH is connected to your egg count, it does not predict your fertility or when you will go through menopause. If your AMH levels are in the typical range, other factors may influence your ability to conceive, including

  • Age, medical conditions, smoking, etc
  • Sperm count and motility

Not ovulating regularly, blocked fallopian tubes, pelvic scarring, endometriosis and uterine abnormalities like fibroids.

What does an Anti-Müllerian Hormone blood test measure?
The Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) test measures the level of AMH in your blood. The production of AMH comes from the cells within the ovarian follicles and has an important function in egg development. An AMH test assess the number of your remaining eggs in your ovaries and helps give an indication of your overall ovarian reserve. It is a very common blood test for women trying to get pregnant or going through IVF.
Why is this blood test important for fertility testing?
It provides an estimate of your ovarian reserve (referring to the number and quality of eggs remaining in your ovaries). A higher AMH level generally indicates a larger number of eggs and potentially a better chance of successful conception. Knowing your AMH level can help guide fertility treatment decisions.
Can AMH levels predict menopause?
Your AMH levels cannot predict menopause. They, however, help indicate if you are approaching menopause or have already begun as your AMH levels provide valuable insight into your ovarian reserve and fertility potential. It is important to note that low AMH levels do not necessarily mean that menopause is imminent. These levels merely indicate that you have fewer eggs remaining.
