D-Dimer is a very important protein present in your blood. It helps indicate the presence of blood clots (which can be life-threatening) and helps determine if you have a blood clotting disorder (like deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or disseminated intravascular coagulation).
Therefore, a dimer blood test is crucial to measure the D-dimer level in your blood and check for any current blood clotting problems.
If you are currently experiencing pain or swelling in your legs, a sudden shortness of breath or chest pain, or unusual bleeding or bruising, we would strongly recommend you get a D-dimer blood test.
We would also recommend you consider getting a D-dimer test if you are at higher risk of clotting due to conditions like recent surgery, immobility, pregnancy, or have a family history of clotting disorders.
D-dimer tests are designed to measure the level of the D-dimer protein in your blood. A normal D-dimer level is usually considered to be less than 500 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL).
If you are taking blood thinners, your “normal” results may be a false negative. This is important to keep in mind. A positive D-dimer result, however, is usually determined by a level of 0.50 mg/L or higher.
A D-dimer blood blood test generally provides quick and accurate results. At Walk-In-Clinic, our healthcare professionals also help guide you through your results and recommend any necessary follow-up treatments.
We offer convenient appointments and flexible booking time slots to suit your schedule, and should additional diagnostic steps or treatments be needed, our team will support you at every stage.
Remember, a D-dimer test can help spot blood clotting disorders like, deep vein thrombosis (DVT, Pulmonary embolism (PE), Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), or whether or not you are at risk of getting a stroke (a blockage in blood flow to the brain, making it worth your while if you think you are at risk.
While the D-Dimer test is highly useful in certain situations, it has limitations. In some cases, the test may show false-positive or false-negative results, meaning:
False Positive: A high D-Dimer level without the presence of blood clots, often due to other conditions like trauma, liver disease, or infection.
False Negative: A normal D-Dimer result despite the presence of a clot, which can occur if the clot is too small to trigger a measurable D-Dimer level.

A D-dimer blood test is used to measure the level of the D-dimer protein in your blood. The D-dimer protein is an important substance produced when a blood clot breaks up. Therefore, a D-dimer test is primarily used to rule out conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), conditions considered with blood clotting conditions.
Your D-dimer blood test involves a super simply blood draw. The blood sample is typically drawn for a vein in your arm. The procedure is quick, and you may feel a small pinch when the needle is inserted. The blood draw will usually take just a few minutes.
Once the blood sample is taken, you may resume normal activities immediately.
If you experience any discomfort, bruising, or swelling at the site of the blood draw, apply gentle pressure and elevate the arm to reduce any swelling.D-dimer levels are measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). The normal range can vary depending on the lab, but generally, a D-dimer level below 500 ng/mL is considered normal. Higher levels may suggest the presence of abnormal clotting, but it does not diagnose a specific condition.
