Iron is essential for producing haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body.
Since imbalances in iron levels can lead to various health issues, it is important to monitor these levels through a quick and simple iron blood test.
Iron levels play a crucial role in various bodily functions. Low iron levels can lead to iron deficiency anaemia, often resulting in fatigue, weakness, and a weakened immune system. In the UK, iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder, affecting around 15% of women of childbearing age and 3% of men.
On the other hand, having too much iron in the blood can indicate conditions like haemochromatosis, where an excess of iron can damage organs. An iron blood test provides valuable insights into your iron status, helping to identify potential deficiencies or excesses.
Over 3 million iron tests are performed annually, including ferritin, transferrin, and total iron-binding capacity. You might be advised to have an iron blood test if you experience symptoms such as:
Individuals with conditions like anaemia, chronic infections, or gastrointestinal disorders, or those undergoing pregnancy, might benefit from regular iron level monitoring as well.
Several factors can contribute to abnormal iron levels. However, the most common cause of iron deficiency is often poor diet, chronic blood loss (such as from heavy menstrual periods or gastrointestinal bleeding), or conditions that impair iron absorption, like coeliac disease.
Elevated iron levels may also result from genetic conditions such as haemochromatosis or from excessive iron supplementation.
Iron is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in numerous bodily functions.

Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as some (like iron supplements) can affect the test results. They may advise you to pause taking iron supplements for a few days before the test. Wear a short-sleeved or loose-sleeved shirt to make it easier to access your vein.
The blood test involves drawing a small sample of blood. A healthcare professional will clean the area with an antiseptic, insert a needle into your vein (usually in the arm), and draw a small sample of blood into a tube. After the draw, a small bandage will be applied to the puncture site, and you will be asked to apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding.
It is common to have a small bruise at the site of the blood draw. Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling if necessary. Your doctor will review the test results with you, which typically take a few days to process. They will explain what the results mean and if any further action is needed. Depending on the results, your doctor may recommend dietary changes, supplements, or further testing.
