Malaria Blood Testing

A malaria blood test test is an important one to have, whether you have malaria or not. Especially if you are travelling to a malaria prone area or returning from one.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip A Malaria Test

Malaria is a very serious disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Even though malaria in the UK is considered to be an “imported” disease. The majority of cases are acquired by people returning from countries where malaria is endemic. It is estimated a total of 2004 malaria cases were reported in the UK in 2023. This is considered a pre-pandemic level. Therefore getting a malaria test matters.

Common Malaria Warning Signs

If you are recently dealing with high fever, chills, or sweating that keeps coming back, it is always a good idea to get tested. Also, if you are experiencing heavy sweating, headaches, unusual tiredness, weakness, or muscle aches on a more frequent basis, consider getting tested. Other signs to watch for include muscle pain, diarrhea, yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), and kidney problems.

When to Get Tested

If you are planning to visit (or have visited) malaria-endemic areas, a test is a must, especially if you have started to develop symptoms. Also pregnant women and children are at higher risk of severe malaria in general and thus should get tested promptly if they show symptoms.

Malaria Prevention

Preventing malaria involves a combination of avoiding mosquito bites and taking preventive medications. Here are key strategies to reduce the risk

  • Insect Repellents: Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin
  • Mosquito Nets: Sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net when you are in a malaria-prone area
  • Wear Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to minimise skin exposure
  • Accommodation With Screens: Stay in accommodation that is either air-conditioned or has window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering
  • Bed Nets: Even in areas with air conditioning or screening, using treated bed nets can offer extra protection, especially when travelling

Can a malaria blood test detect other diseases?
Standard malaria blood testing is designed to detect the Plasmodium parasite. However, some tests, especially rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), can also detect other diseases like typhoid fever or other fever-related illnesses, depending on the test type and location. While malaria tests are very specific, a person with malaria symptoms may be tested for other conditions at the same time to rule out other possible causes.
Can a malaria blood test detect past infections or immunity?
A standard malaria blood test detects active infections, not past ones. However, specialised tests like serological tests can detect antibodies that the body produces after a past malaria infection. These tests are not used to diagnose current infections, but they can show if someone has had malaria before or if they might have developed partial immunity to the disease.
What happens if I do not get treated for malaria?
If left untreated, malaria can lead to severe health complications, including organ failure, anaemia, especially if caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite.
