Blood Tests > Oestradiol Blood Test
Oestrogen is an important hormone for both men and women. It helps control reproductive and general health. Oestradiol is a type of oestrogen. An oestradiol blood test is often used to check how well the ovaries are working and assess fertility.
This test is especially helpful for women going through menopause or those being treated for conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). To give you an idea, currently, about 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the UK are estimated to have PCOS.
An oestradiol blood test is usually recommended to assist with:
Your oestradiol levels can vary based on your age, gender, and the phase of your menstrual cycle.
Low oestradiol levels may indicate menopause, certain reproductive health issues, or ovarian insufficiency. It can also be a sign of nutritional deficiencies, stress, or excessive exercise.
High levels of oestradiol could indicate hormone imbalances, ovarian cysts, or even certain types of cancer. It can even indicate potential issues with your liver.
Some of the most common conditions linked to abnormal oestradiol levels include Premature Ovarian Failure (POF). This is when the ovaries stop functioning before the age of 40.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome tends to cause high oestradiol levels, in combination with other hormonal imbalances. Endometriosis is another condition that can cause fluctuating oestradiol levels.
Of course, certain types of ovarian cysts can also produce excess oestradiol, leading to higher levels of the hormone.
By regularly monitoring your oestradiol levels, you can:

You will be seen by one of our friendly phlebotomists or trained clinicians.

Oestradiol levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, so the test may need to be timed at a specific point in the cycle (often on the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation or around ovulation), depending on the purpose. Please inform your doctor about any medications you are taking. This includes hormonal treatments or birth control.

An oestradiol blood test is very straightforward. The procedure is also relatively quick and painless. One of our healthcare professionals will clean the area, apply a tourniquet to make veins more prominent and collect a sample into a test tube.

Results are typically available within a few days. Your healthcare provider will discuss the findings with you, interpret the results, and advise on any necessary next steps.
