Cardiac screening for athletes

The branch of medicine that incorporates sports cardiology is designed to keep athletes healthy and active in their regular sports practice.

Doctors who treat and monitor the heart health of athletes are trained in cardiology, but also have special training to understand the physiology of athletes and the particular physical demands of competitive sports.

Sports cardiology is designed to help athletes maintain their athletic participation, and treatment focuses on methods that will allow you to play sports as much as possible. A sports cardiologist may advise you on methods for improving training and performance.

You will also be evaluated for any potential serious cardiovascular conditions and any risks associated with them. A sports cardiology consultation with one of our specialists will include:

  • A detailed review of your medical and athletic history.
  • An evaluation of any symptoms you are noticing, and then depending on your individual case and needs.
  • An ECG (electrocardiogram) and physical cardiovascular examination, stress or exercise testing, blood tests, and recommendations for any physical therapy training you may need.

You may wish to see a specialists in sports cardiology for clearance in specific sports participation, an evaluation of ongoing symptoms or sudden deterioration in performance, advice for managing cardiovascular risk factors, or to get a comprehensive picture of your cardiovascular health in the context of your sports participation.
