An H pylori test screens for specific antibodies in your blood that are produced by your immune system in response to an Helicobacter pylori infection. If antibodies are found, it usually means you have had or have an H pylori infection.
Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped bacteria that lives in the stomach lining and is one of the most common causes of gastrointestinal discomfort. It can cause irritation and inflammation, which might lead to ulcers and, over time, more serious digestive issues if left untreated.
Ongoing stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or unexplained weight loss are some of the common symptoms associated with H pylori. Other symptoms include feeling full, acid reflux, and discomfort after eating.
This is because this bacteria is known to cause issues like stomach pain, ulcers, gastritis, indigestion, and even stomach cancer. That is why catching it early can help you manage and treat the condition more effectively.
A negative H pylori test result means that you probably do not have an H pylori infection. However, it could also be that your body has not produced enough antibodies against the infection yet (in the case that it is an active infection). Therefore, if you are dealing with H pylori symptoms, another test (or further testing) may be scheduled.
A positive test result means that you have had or have an H pylori infection. Your doctor will prescribe a suitable treatment and may order additional tests if need be.
