MG Testing

A Myasthenia Gravis blood test looks for antibodies that attack the communication between your nerves and your muscles. The presence of these antibodies in your blood can help detect the early onset of the autoimmune disorder, Myasthenia Gravis.

What Causes Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia Gravis is a long-term neuromuscular disorder that causes weakness in your skeletal muscles. It commonly affects the muscles that control eye movements, facial expressions, swallowing, and breathing.

This disorder happens when your immune system makes antibodies that stop or damage the acetylcholine receptors (which help muscles work) on your muscle cells. Thymus gland abnormalities can also contribute to the production of the antibodies that attack the acetylcholine receptors.

MG Blood Test Explained

A Myasthenia Gravis test screens your blood for specific antibodies that can block nerve signals to your muscles. These include AChR (acetylcholine receptor) and MuSK (muscle-specific kinase) antibodies. If you have high levels of these two types of antibodies, it could mean that you have Myasthenia Gravis. Another marker used to diagnose Myasthenia Gravis, although less common than the above two, is Anti-LRP4 Antibodies.

Myasthenia Gravis Symptoms

If you have recently started dealing with things like drooping eyelids, double vision, difficulty swallowing or speaking, weakness in the arms, legs, or diaphragm, difficulty breathing or fatigue after physical exertion, getting yourself tested for MG is highly recommended.

What Your Results Could Mean

Your results will typically be made available within a few days to a week after testing

A positive test result usually indicates the presence of the antibodies associated with Myasthenia Gravis. This suggests a high likelihood that you may have the condition. Your doctor will advise you on the steps going forward

A negative result does not completely rule out Myasthenia Gravis. Some patients with the condition may not have detectable levels of the antibodies. This is especially true in the early stages or in those with MuSK antibody-negative disease.

Can the Myasthenia Gravis blood test confirm the severity of the disease?
An MG blood test can show if you have antibodies linked to Myasthenia Gravis (MG), but it cannot indicate how severe the condition is. Sometimes, people with high antibody levels feel only mild symptoms, while others with very low or no antibodies can experience more noticeable muscle weakness.
Is the Myasthenia Gravis test recommended for routine screening?
This test is not part of routine screening, as Myasthenia Gravis is a rare condition. It is only done when MG symptoms are present like muscle fatigue, drooping eyelids, and trouble swallowing.
Can pregnancy affect my MG test results?
Pregnancy does not directly affect the test results, but the hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect Myasthenia Gravis symptoms. Women with MG can also pass antibodies to their babies, which may cause temporary muscle weakness in newborns.
