Benefits Of Coil Fitting

Coils, or intrauterine devices (IUDs), are a popular choice for long-term birth control due to their numerous benefits. They are highly effective, with over 99% efficacy in preventing pregnancy.

IUDs can remain in place for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type. They offer the advantage of reversibility, with fertility returning quickly after removal. IUDs are also low maintenance; once fitted, they require no daily or monthly routine.

Types Of Coils We Offer

We offer a range of coils to suit different needs. The Copper IUD is a non-hormonal option that provides effective contraception for up to 10 years by preventing sperm from fertilising an egg.

Alternatively, the hormonal IUD releases a small amount of the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy and is effective for 3 to 5 years. In addition to its contraceptive benefits, the hormonal IUD also helps reduce menstrual bleeding and cramps.

What To Expect

After the insertion of the coil, some women may experience initial discomfort, such as cramping or spotting, for a few days.

This is a normal reaction and typically subsides quickly. To ensure the coil is correctly positioned and to address any concerns, it is important to attend regular follow-up appointments.

Ideal Candidate For IUD

Here are some specific characteristics that might make someone a good candidate for an IUD:

  • Stable Health: Women with no history of certain health conditions, such as severe pelvic infections or certain types of cancer, may be better candidates.
  • Desire For Long-Term Contraception: Those who want a long-acting, hassle-free method of birth control that does not require daily attention.
  • No History Of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Although IUDs can be used by women with a history of PID, it might be a factor to consider and discuss with a healthcare provider.
  • Non-Smokers: Women who smoke heavily might face higher risks with some contraceptive methods.
  • No Risk Of Pregnancy-Related Complications: Women who do not have contraindications like certain uterine abnormalities or severe bleeding disorders might be more suitable.
  • Understanding And Acceptance: Those who are well-informed about IUDs and are comfortable with their potential side effects and benefits.
  • Understanding Of STI Risks: While IUDs are effective at preventing pregnancy, they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Women who are in a stable relationship or who use barrier methods to protect against STIs may be ideal candidates.

The Procedure

preparing for appointment

Pre-Appointment

A coil is inserted by one of our specialist nurses. Prior to the insertion, you will have a consultation and assessment conducted by telephone. Following this, your coil insertion appointment will be scheduled at our Central London clinic, where the procedure will take approximately 45 minutes.

during the appointment

Appointment

The procedure itself is quick and easy. You will lie on an examination table with your feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. The healthcare provider will use a speculum to access your cervix, and then insert the IUD through the cervix into the uterus. The procedure typically takes a few minutes.

post appointment

Post-Appointment

Light cramping and spotting are common for a few days after insertion. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Your provider may schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure the IUD is in place and check for any issues. You can typically resume normal activities immediately, though it’s wise to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for a short period.

What is Coil Fitting?
Coil fitting refers to the process of inserting an intrauterine device (IUD) or intrauterine system (IUS) into a woman’s uterus as a form of contraception. These devices are commonly known as “coils”. Coil fitting is a medical procedure typically performed by a healthcare professional, such as a gynaecologist or a specially trained nurse.
Is coil fitting painful?
The experience of pain during coil fitting can vary from person to person. Some individuals may find the procedure uncomfortable, while others may report only mild discomfort or no pain at all.
What to expect after coil fitting?
It’s common to encounter cramping discomfort in the immediate aftermath of the fitting, a sensation that may persist for several days. Utilising common pain relievers like ibuprofen and paracetamol can effectively alleviate this discomfort. Additionally, you might notice some minor vaginal bleeding following the fitting.
